What a free practice test is actually for
A first practice test is not a rehearsal - it is a measurement. Take one before revising anything and the score tells you where you stand, which is the only information worth having on day one. Most people score somewhere in the high twenties or low thirties, and that is normal.
What matters is not the total but the breakdown. Losing points on road signs is a volume problem, solved by repetition. Losing them on priority rules is a comprehension problem, solved by understanding one rule and its exceptions. The same score means two entirely different evenings of work.
Practice test, quiz or mock exam?
The three overlap in everyday speech and not at all in practice.
| Format | What it is | Use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Topic quiz | One chapter, no timer, explained answers | Learn a rule properly |
| Practice test | Mixed chapters, no exam pressure | Check nothing is left behind |
| Mock exam | 40 questions, timed, real marking | Measure whether you are ready |
Order matters. Starting with mock exams produces low scores with no idea what to fix; starting with quizzes builds something the mock exam can then measure.
How the marking actually works
The French code test is marked on correct answers: you answer forty questions and need at least 35 right to pass. In other words you can afford to miss five, no more. That narrow margin is why candidates fail believing they were "only a few questions off".
Mistakes cluster in a few chapters - priority at junctions, overtaking, motorway driving, vulnerable road users, emergencies. Those are the chapters where an extra hour changes the outcome; the information signs are not.
Are these the real exam questions?
No, and nobody's are. The official question bank is not public, and any site claiming to publish it is saying something untrue. What can be reproduced faithfully is the format: the same number of questions, the same timing, the same pass mark, the same chapters, and the same style of wording - including the negative phrasings ("what must you not do") that catch people who read the answers before the question.
That is what practising here gives you. Preparation is about the rules and the reflexes, not about memorising a leaked list.
When to stop practising and book
The usable signal is not "I have read everything" but a repeatable result: three consecutive mock exams above 38/40, on different question sets. Thirty-eight rather than thirty-five, because the margin absorbs stress, tiredness and the two oddly worded questions that always turn up.
One good score can be a favourable draw. Three in a row cannot - and a failed attempt means paying the €30 fee again and finding a new slot, which costs far more time than one more week of free practice.

Yes, the lessons, quizzes and mock exams are available in English. Note that the official code test itself is taken in French, so use the practice to build the Highway Code vocabulary too.
